Appeal to Novelty

The Fallacy

Arguing that a proposal or claim is superior solely because it is new or modern.

Why it's wrong

Newness itself is not a guarantee of quality or truth. Just as tradition doesn't make something right (Appeal to Tradition), novelty doesn't make it better. Things can be new and bad, or new and ineffective. This fallacy assumes that because something is 'latest' it is automatically 'greatest'.

Example

The company decided to replace their reliable, decades-old software with a brand new, glitchy app simply because the CEO wanted to be 'cutting edge'.
