Etymological Fallacy

What is it?

Arguing that the present-day meaning of a word or phrase must be exactly the same as its historical or original meaning.

Why is it bad?

Arguing that the way a slang term or word is currently used in the community is wrong because it contradicts the original, historical definition.

You can't say that meme is 'literally' the funniest thing ever. Unless it actually, physically is the pinnacle of all comedy in reality, you're using 'literally' wrong. It means 'in a literal sense', not 'figuratively'.
