Motte and Bailey
The Definition
Conflating a modest, defensible political stance (Motte) with a highly controversial, extreme one (Bailey).
The Explanation
A politician champions a radical slogan to rally the base. When criticized by the mainstream, they retreat to a bland, obvious interpretation of the slogan, claiming they are being misrepresented.
Political Example
Activist: 'Abolish all prisons!' (Bailey). Critic: 'But what about serial killers?' Activist: 'I just mean we need serious criminal justice reform and better rehabilitation programs.' (Motte). Critic: 'I agree with that.' Activist: 'Exactly! So abolish all prisons!' (Back to Bailey).
