The Explanation
By exaggerating, misrepresenting, or just completely fabricating a rival politician's stance, it's much easier to present your own policy as being the only reasonable choice, undermining honest political debate.
Political Example
When the Senator suggested a modest reduction in the military budget to fund veterans' healthcare, the opposing party aired ads claiming he 'wants to leave America completely defenseless against our enemies'.
