Spotlight Fallacy

The Fallacy

Assuming that the media coverage of a certain class or category represents the class or category in general.

Why it's wrong

Media often focuses on the sensational, the unusual, or the extreme because that is what attracts viewers. When people consume this media, they may mistakenly believe that these extreme examples are representative of the whole group, leading to skewed perceptions of reality.

Example

After watching the news cover three plane crashes in a month, Martha refused to fly, convinced that aviation was incredibly dangerous, despite statistics showing it is the safest mode of travel.
