Wishful Thinking

The Fallacy

Forming conclusions based on what represents a pleasing outcome rather than on evidence or reason.

Why it's wrong

This is a cognitive bias where we believe something is true simply because we want it to be true. It involves resolving conflicts between belief and reality by rejecting reality in favor of the desired belief, often ignoring contrary evidence.

Example

Despite all the structural engineers warning that the bridge was unsafe, the mayor insisted it would hold up just fine because the city really needed it to be open for the parade.
